When heated by the sun, the roof transmits heat to the insulating material, which is a heat retarder. The heat is then transferred to the structural components of the roof, and into the building.

The fresh air that comes from the eaves is heated inside the ventilation space by the sun. As a consequence it becomes lighter and escapes from the ridge of the roof, thus cooling the roofing material.
