SAINT FRANCES DE SALES CHURCH, ROME

The local community plays a central role in this project . Indeed, the church of Saint Frances de Sales is not only a monument, but also the expression of the entire community. Light plays an important role: both the "natural light" that comes into the church through the windows along the perimeter, and the "artificial light", which has been specifically designed to enhance the assembly spaces and to make the church visible from the outside, as if to say that “the church is alive”.
The church has a regular octagonal shape, whose central focus is the altar. This layout blends the central and the longitudinal sections together using an octagonal shape. The central nave is covered by the same roof and its shape is typical of a church.

Good-quality, innovative architecture
Two different materials were used for the structure : reinforced concrete was used for the walls, stripwood was used for the roof . Both the external plastered walls and the internal smoothed concrete walls are white. The glass panels of the windows are white in the low section and clear light blue in the top section. The door and window frames are dark blue. The warm and delicate colours of stripwood and copper are also used. In particular, the copper roof has a traditional style and is typical of a church that wants to be the meeting-point between tradition and innovation.

A roof made of copper
The roof of this church is made with copper tiles Prestige Compact by Tegola Canadese. Prestige Compact tiles are technologically innovative, despite the fact that they are made with an ancient material that has always been used by man because of its ecxcellent durability. Once installed, Tegola Canadese’s copper shingles are ideal for any roof pitch. The resulting visual effect is characterised by a beautiful pattern. Indeed, the distinguishing feature of the church is the roof, which covers the entire building and envelopes it delicately, as if it was literally embracing the curch community.

The front view of the church is characterised by a frame that stands out above the portal. Indeed, the frame has the function of welcoming people into the church. This architectural feature is characterising of a church that wants to protect its congregation and accompany them all through their lives.
